Gas enhanced oil recovery is a highly successful commercial process. The biggest challenge for gas EOR is the availability of injection gas. Better mobility control methods to improve the sweep efficiency would make better use of the available gas and improve the economics of the process, so ways to do that are one of the main goals of this research. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) may eventually provide large sources of carbon dioxide if it can be done economically by combining CCS with EOR. Other key issues for gas flooding are the effect of asphaltene precipitation, relative permeability and improved reservoir characterization and performance predictions.
