Message from the Director

Welcome to the Center for Subsurface Energy and the Environment, or CSEE.

My name is Matthew Balhoff and I’m the director of the Center. I am also a professor in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

In the Center, we work on a wide variety of subsurface applications, including conventional and unconventional oil and gas, geothermal energy, and carbon storage and sequestration. We have expertise in many different technical disciplines, including reservoir production and drilling engineering, computation science, solid and geomechanics, as well as petrophysics and formation evaluation. We use many different engineering tools to solve our problems, including large-scale models, such as reservoir simulation, pore-scale models, small-scale experiments, and large-scale bench top experiments.

We boast some of the world’s best faculty in the area of subsurface engineering and we are training the next generation of scientists and engineers in our postdocs and students.

Please reach out to us if you would like to collaborate! We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
